Sport Management, MS

The on-campus Master of Science in Sport Management program prepares you to compete in the global job sport market as an industry leader. This 30-credit hour program is delivered on-campus and provides real-world training in a range of areas including data-based decisions, management and human development, revenue generation, ethical decision-making, and more. The curriculum is designed to provide students with broad professional preparation in the sport management field to accommodate a variety of professional and career goals. The plan of study also affords students with the opportunity to further specialize in one of two tracks:

  • Professional Track: Ideal if you鈥檙e working in or entering the sport industry. This path includes hands-on experience and the option to earn a graduate certificate in Sport Industry Leadership and Change Management.
  • Thesis Track: Designed for students considering a PhD or research-focused career. This path includes mentored research and the opportunity to earn a graduate certificate in Advanced Sport Management Research.

The Master of Science in Sport Management is designed to prepare you to work behind-the-scenes of the sport industry, one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S.

This broad-based program prepares you to enter any part of the sport industry through either the professional or thesis pathway.

Graduates leave the program with a competitive edge built on real-world knowledge and skills that translate across the sport industry. Courses cover current challenges and opportunities in the sport industry, including technology use, business, and marketing planning, budgeting, and fundraising.

As a member of the Big 12 Conference, WVU is home to one of the nation鈥檚 premier college athletic programs. This backdrop provides you with access to a world-class network of sport management professionals, including faculty and staff, alumni, and organizational partners. Courses give you frequent opportunities to build connections with classmates and colleagues in the program.   • Professional Track

    The Professional Track is developed for students who are seeking entry or currently working in the sport industry. Students in this track can pursue a Sport Industry Leadership and Change Management certificate that features experiential learning through an internship in the sport industry.

  • Thesis Track

    The Thesis Track is for students who are considering doctoral-level work in the future. Sport Management has continued to emerge as a popular area of study in colleges and universities across the world. The completion of a master鈥檚 thesis remains an important benchmark for those who aspire to faculty and/or research positions in higher education. The ability to effectively collect, manage, analyze, and interpret data also has implications for leaders of many non-profit organizations and sport associations. Students in this track can pursue the Advanced Sport Management Research certificate that features an emphasis on research methods and mentored research.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into a graduate program at WVU an applicant must submit official, bachelor's degree transcripts from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75. WVU operates decentralized admissions. Decentralized admissions allows each graduate program to set its own application requirements in addition to the University requirements.
